This post is "just for fun".... to help shake-up everyone's memories of the town and surrounding area. I just browsed through my own brain over the last 10 minutes, and came up with the following list...
Let's make it a little game..
Do you remember the following places, and if so...
Where were they located?
Any memories stand-out with these places?
Ok..before the haters jump in, a BUNCH of these are not in Bellmawr but are right next to the town. Us long time Bellmawr residents will remember these places. I have a bunch of other memories from the town: restaraunts and small stores... but can't think of the names to suggest!
1. Brown's Heritage Dairy Store
2. A Pizza Place, in a building shaped like a Hamburger
3. Taso's Restaraunt
4. Wayne's Hardware store, that burnt down in a spectacular fire
5. Disalvio's Tavern
6. Hollywood Cafe
7. Finish Line Tavern
8. Crescent Market
9. Roy Rogers Restaraunt
10. BellBrook Volkswagen Dealership
11. Woodshed Tavern

18. Bellmawr Sewer Plant
19. Dick Lee's Night Club
20. Grants Store
21. VFW 7410 post's first location in Bellmawr
22. An Electronics Store, shaped like an Alpine Lodge
23. Colonial Meat Market (and Video game store!)
24. Basketball Courts and Playground, that was covered with 10 feet of dirt!
25. The FIRST Wendy's in Bellmawr (the current one is the second)
26. Cumberland Farms
27. Apartment Complex on Black Horse Pike, now gone
28. Travel agency that a car drove through

wow some of the things here do take us down memory lane, I grew up in bellmawr back in the 60's and 70's and alot of these things are as real as yesterday. How about the civic building and the VFW on blocks and the horse that lived on essex ave. Cutting thru bellmawr park and the wip woods. The pool at bellmawr manor and the playground at park and browning before the shell station. The weekends at jack in the box in brooklawn and all the motor heads. My neighbors in crescent park were the best ever. Everbody looked out for everyone and we all had the best of times because all we had was each other. The playgrounds were always crowded all year round. No cable tv, video games just westbrook lanes to hang out at. Good Job I really enjoy this page

My first job was at Roy Rogers. I remember that Pat Steaks - it was where the Wachovia is now. Was the Grants where K-Mart is - or was that in Lawnside - or maybe I'm thinking of Two-Guys???

My husband remembered that before it was Roy Rogers it was Geno's/Gino's? Remember that?
Re: the mosquito truck, I remember it coming around and everybody just standing there breathing it in. Nobody went inside to get away from it. Or people would chase after the fog!

Geno's! Absolutely remember that it was genos... and thier signature Geno's Giant burger! They wore little red hats, with mesh on the top.. and would give them to the kids.
And the mosquito truck... kids would chase after that thing on thier bikes.... 10 feet behind it hidden in the fog!!!
Which reminds me of another one that has vanished... Bumper Riding in the snow!!! When the snow was covering the streets, you'd sneak up behind the slow moving car and grab onto the bumper for a ride. Very dangerous, looking back at it... dry spots... bumps.... other cars. I'm sure this still goes on in certain places... but we had 50+ kids doing this on snowy days. Center and Park Drive would be loaded with kids!! Lots of fun stories there... the one time a VW bug came along with a perfect extended rear bumper, more like a board going across and bloted on... made it so easy for a bunk of kids to get on. Well the weight of the riders caused the bumper to come off... funny thing is the drive didnt know and kept driving on, adn the kids were still crouched down holding the bumper in the air like it was still attached to the car!
KIDS... dont' try this at home!!!

Too funny about "car hopping."
I lived down the street from Bellmawr Lake and I remember alot of puddles would form from the big summer rainstorms. Kids would stand on the corners of Booth, Anthony and Peach near the big puddles and wait for cars to drive through them so the kids could get splashed. I wasn't allowed to do it because my mom thought we would get polio.

Polio from a puddle? Classic!!!
Hangingout... early 80s, there was a basketball court at the softball field. On any given weekend night there would be 100 kids hanging out there... with nothing better to do. (including me)

Remember when the fire men would come by at night to fill the basketball courts with water so we could ice skate or play hockey? How about ridding motor cycles through the WIP woods? Go Vespa go!
I think the old VFW Post 7410 was located on Princeton Ave. in front of the water tower. I think it’s a girls softball field now. I left Bellmawr back in the mid 80's so I’m not sure what is what now.
I can remember going there on election day with my parents. I enjoyed walking up there with my parents just so I could go inside those BIG old voting machines. And speaking of walking, what person in their right mind walks anywhere today? Not to mention to and from school everyday!
Anybody remember being a paper boy back then? We’d pickup papers at the house on Market and Monroe. Do they even have paper boys any more? I know they don’t here.
I might be wrong on this one. I think the first Rite Aid was the old Crescent Park Pharmacy at Browning and Warren. Something tells me a Rite Aid might have appeared on the “other side of town” before that one.
Anybody remember when the fire house burnt down? The wife and I had the last wedding reception there before the fire. Guess we really heated it up.

I remember when the firehouse burnt down!
I was a Courier Post "paper girl" - as we liberated pre-teens used to call ourselves.
My brother-in-law used to remember being able to "sneak out of the house at 3:00 am and walking over to Alcyon Drive to play basketball because there was always a game going on over there!"
Anybody remember dialing "O" for operator on a rotary phone and hanging up - just to do it??

One more thing-- wasn't there a "party line" where you would dial a busy signal so you could hear people talking between the busy signals? But you would have to scream to talk???

I guess I'm a little older than most of the readers. You sure remember some good things. I remember swimming in Campanelli's Pool. It was a couple blocks up from the Bellmawr Boro Hall, across the street, and back a block or two. There were 2 pools, one was much deeper than the other. This was back around the early 40's. We had such good times there. It has always stayed in my mind. There were changing rooms and snack bar. Does anyone else remember this?

I remember Dick from the Little League. I think he died several years ago. I remember he used to collect all the time with his hat. I used to bring maybe 50 cents to the games to get candy at the stand and he would get mad if you didn't put $$ in his hat.
My husband used to "train" with Biaselli at the rec and just saw him a few months ago. Does he live in California now?? He recently had a book published about weight lifting/training.

Wow, a lot of these really took me back. I was born and raised in town, so I remember a lot of it. The Taso's I remember was on West Browning Road, where Bellmawr Pizza is now, Di Salvio's was on the corner of Black Horse Pike and Browning Road, Hollywood Cafe' was on the Pike in Mt. Ephraim, where Grease 'n' Go is now. Years ago it used to be Capriotti's, and the downstairs bar was the Rathskeller. The Finish Line needs no introduction, but ironic in that it was right next to a cemetary. BellBrook VW was where the Eckerd is now, and used to be Roberts VW back in the day. The Woodshed is now Dominic's, Pantry Pride is now Brown's Shop-Rite, the FBI office was at Benigno and Heller in the Business Park, there was a 1st Peoples Bank at Bell and Browning, Dick Lee's is now the Pennant East, but I haven't been in there for a long time. Grant's became the K-Mart, the 3 7 elevens were at the point, Browning and Park Drive, and East Browning next to the apartments. Jack In the Box is now a Chinese buffet across from Ponzio's, and pony rides used to be at Bell's Farm, also at Bell and Browning. My Dad used to take me on Sundays when I was a kid. I also remember Don's fort. It was like a labrynth of huts, sort of, made almost entirely of old pallets. Here's a couple for you-how about Ron's Mobil? Dembo's Corner Store? Josie's Place? La Roma Pizza? The Laundromat (Not the one behind The Bank)? Monticello went the way of the Dodo, replaced by a HoJo Express, Super8 or Quality Inn. Crescent Park School? The list is endless.

How about Rudys cold cuts where Italian Paradise is, Heap Big Beef and Arthur Treachers in the Brooklawn shopping center, and the big drug store near Dr Barati's on the corner at the Black Horse Pike and Browning Road? Meant to say Arthur Treachers was on the Black Horse Pike in Mt Ephraim. A reader mentioned the Donut place (sold only donuts!) where the Bellmawr News is on Browning Road. Also Oasis across from Annunciation. Also from Bob, a long time former Bellmawr resident: "Wonder if anyone remembered the names of the barber, cleaners, grocery store, candy store or any of the deli's on Victory Drive in Bellmawr Park, the names of any of the youth groups around the park other than scouts and little league, when/where the little league was on Browning Rd before it moved to Essex Rd. Or how about how /when Forest Drive was created, where the veterin's memorials were (I remember at least two incarnations in the 50's). During the mid to late 50's, where the lower grades were housed before the addition was built on the Bellmawr Park school, where the Baptist church met before it was constructed on Creek Road and what Valley Road's original name and why it was changed (I think several other street names were altered at the same time). The company names of any Bread/Milk/Cleaner that delivered to your house (extra points if you remember their names, some even had "master house keys" so they could put the milk in the fridge)." Also a Bellmawr life long resident on Railroad Ave says there used to be a bubbling fresh water spring on Hall Ave not to far from the Rec and water tower. One of the few things in the list I don't recall was the Brown's Heritage-- when did it leave and what is there now?

The big hill with the tracks at the bottom was Hall Avenue. That's where they had the soap box derby races on the 4th of July. George needs to stop putting his thong on backwards, too. Coyote mentioned "street" hockey on the dead end of Flanders Road. I played there religiously-Windsor Drive, too. I remember one time, when the FIRST rink at Anderson avenue was built, we all went down to play, and as we walked and rode bikes, I got hit in the eye with a hockey ball, and dropped like a stone, out cold. I also remember the FIRST incarnation of the hockey league. They didn't have a rink, so they had to use the gyms at both Bell Oaks and Crescent Park Schools. That was before the APR's were built at Bellmawr Park and Burke Schools. I haven't thought about these things in a long, long time. Mark, on the Josie's Place comment, the family may have resurfaced in Gloucester Township. I saw a new building on Lower Landing Road, just adjacent to the entrance for 42 North, by Lakeview Apartments. It's either another Josie's Place, or Bisconti Catering, I can't be certain. Who remembers when there was nothing but trees between Ron's Mobil and the Sunoco on Edgewood Avenue? The playground on Windsor Drive? Here's another throwback for you-who remembers the Oasis?

Oh, the memories. I've in Bellmawr for 52 years and I remember 1. Browns Hertages 2. Beef Burger which is now Wachovia 3. Can't recall Taso's 4. May dad worked at Wayne's Hardware 5. DiSalvios was Mingle and Starr and now Canal's 6.Don't remember Hollywood Cafe 7.Finish Line-Trash City now Superfresh complex 8. Crescent Market,Not sure what it is now. 9. Roy Rogers was Gino's at the Gas station on 130 across from Glassman 10. BellBrook was where Eckerd's is now 11. Woodshed Tavern I do not remember 12. Yes the snake walk, it was such a big deal to walk to the new crescent park school for the Xmas shows. 13. Pantry Pride opened with Pixann as their celebrity 14. Bellmawr Post office where Samsone Florist was 15. FBI Headquarters, you always watched who went in. 16.The only diner shaped like a ship that I remember was the Brooklawn Diner 17. First Peoples was where the Photographer is at BHP & Browning and Wachovia in Brooklawn 18. Bellmawr Sewer Plant. My mom picketed and they called it Smellmawr 19. Dick Lees's is The Penant 20 Grants is Kmart 21. VFW was on Princeton Ave. at the girl's softball field, Great sledding. I remember Cumberland Farms on Creed Road, Bell Crest Pharmacy, I ran into it on the side with my dad's car. Bellmawr Lake was only for the residents of Bellmawr, Pony rides at Bells Farm 3 rounds for 10 cents. Browning road was a dirt road and there were only woods behind Princeton Ave and between Farragut and Creek and the old hermit that lived in the woods on creek rd. Blackberry picking where the apartments and D'Orazio is. Picking tadpoles from the ponds down by WIP tower. Cutting through the woods to get to Bellmawr Park School. Pearl's Candy store that now is Bellmawr Park school parking lot. The Oasis that was next to Johnnies Liquors at the end of Princeton, great chocolate cokes and Leslies Bakery where Sneakin in is now. Yes, I remember the yum-yum man and snowball man and the clothes prop man. Do you remember the portable merry go rounds on the back of a truck and when the fire trucks would come around in a winter storm to make sure everyone was o.k. Laroma's had the best Pizza. Remember when we could sleep on the living room floor in the heat of the summer with the front door open. Oh they were the days, I would love to have some of them back.

Hollywood Cafe' used to be Capriotti's on Black Horse Pike in Mt. Ephraim, where Grease 'N' Go is now, near Mc Donald's. I remember car-hopping in the winter (that's what we called it). It seems like it snowed more in the winter when I was young, and it took days to melt away. Now, the Highway Department has such a jump on snow and ice removal. It's a great thing, trust me, but I just miss when you could do donuts with your bike, wipe out in a snowbank, and laugh your a** off!!! I also remember walking to grade school at Annunciation, and cutting through "the woods" to get there. My sister used to work at La Roma's. Every Saturday night we'd have free pizza, whether I went there, or she brought it home. So many things can go wrong in a town; it's nice to see so many people reminiscing about their younger years-about the good things that used to happen.

i HAD TO SEE IF YU REMEMBER A FEW MORE THINGS, Bellmawr Drive In at Anderson Ave. and Black Horse Pike, with miniture golf, the junk store or was it a furniture store on the opposite side of the pike, before 295 was built. The little red church at the top of the hill n the pike now Calvery Chapels. When Browning Rd was called Shady Lane and was a dirt road. The first police chief and his motor cycle. Bells Farms and we fed the horses, A little corner store that had penny candy Spruce and Browning, My Mom learned to swim in Campellna's pool back off of Browning rd. Haines on browning Rd. who sold chicken feed. When Devon Ave. didnt go all the way thru. Joe the shoemaker, The bellmawr Drug store where Wallgreens is, Doc who was the pharmisticts. I remember when they built 295. Black Horse Pike was just a 2 lane highway and in the summer time you couldnt get across unless you climb the bumpers. aaaahhhh the good old days.... thanks for the memories....

How about when most of Bellmawr from 295 to the corner of creek road and Browning Rd was Bell's Farm (Peaches and Pear Trees). Also Dunk's Farm now the Industrial Park. No one mentioned the Army Camp (Nikie Base) on Browning Lane in the middle of the Peach Trees. How about the oldest House in Bellmawr (The Alabam's House) built in the late 1700's. How about John's candie store, in Bellmawr park. The Mud Hole where we all went swiming., at the edge of Dunks farm. How about when Creek Road was a dirt road and Browning RD. was a Oil cinder filled road that looks like asfalt. Someone mentioned a cabin on Creek Rd, It that old man Meeks House on the creek in Cresent Park. He served in the French and Indian War. Who can forget the Tarzan Swings behind the Park Fire House on Essex Ave and the one on 295 North entrance. How about Ice Skateing behine Alision Drive.

Wow...what a find...this site. Remember when school was closed due to snow...the fire siren sounded at 7 a.m. Before the Cresent Park School was built it was a portion of Big Timber Creek that went under Creek Road. On the side of the school before it was built and filled in we swam there. The houses on Park Drive were just built. We used to all sled down the hill at the end of Salem Avenue. Brown's Market took our soda bottles and gave us back "cash"...we were rich. At the time the nuns at Annunciation School said it was forbidden to go into the Oasis 'anytime' and the penny candy in the store at Browning Road and Warran Avenue was sometimes two for a penny and worth not buying milk at school...the circus came to town at Browning Road and Park Avenue...Pantry Pride was "Food Fair" where we'd stand at the exit asking to "push carts" and load groceries into cars. Making sometimes fifty to seventy-five cents was an afternoon of fifteen cent hamburgers across the parking lot that was made into John's Pizza later on. Thank's everyone...we had it made...and still do...thanks to these wonderful memories...! And the Santa on the firetruck on Christmas Eve...and the industrial park was mountains of dirt called "Grasshopper Paradise" and the houses bordering it had chicken coops...WOW!

Does anyone remember the name of the Army camp in Bellmawr? How about the HILL as we called it. It's a walled mound of dirt behind Princeton Ave. where we played baseball and wondered why we never broke any windows. Bellmawr steel sponsered my little league team and was owned by the Mayor. You turned over your Christmas tree at the Bellmawr fire co. and they gave U a free hotdog and coke and got rid of the trees. Playing basketball behind the old little league field where the new Annunciation Church is. Halloween night, the owner of Johnny's liquors would throw a jar of pennies all over his lot for the kids. Cheese hoagies and tuna hoiagies from the Oasis for us Catholics on Fridays when U went 2 HELL for eating meat on a Friday. The # 42 bus line that ran to Bellmawr or was it #24? Lesley's bakery moved from the Princeton Ave. area closer to the Pike and still made the best CREAM donuts that we can't find any more! Ah, the 50's and 60's...what an easier time to live!!!!

The bus was #42. It ran from Bellmawr Park to Camden. Leslie's Bakery made the BEST butter cake. There was also Maloni's shoes in the row of stores next to Johnnie's and the Oasis. Also there was Nick's Barber Shop on Browning Road near Alcyon Drive.

Funny U should mention the butter cake from Leslie's bakery as I still am trying to find one that buttery to this day!! Went to Nick's shop always and I remember he gave out combs or Hop a Long Cassidy Shampoo at Christmas. Chief Halftown also appeared at a group of stores to the left of the Bellmawr Park Public School once. How about all the items we had to sell from Annunciation Grade School...candy bars, Christmas wrappings,Easter candy, magazines,etc..thought I was majoring in salesmanship! I also remember Officer Sears of the Bellmawr Police Station who stopped me once to make sure I only had an air rifle and was playing Army.."you'll shoot your eye out"!!

Just came across this blog and went WOW, how cool is this. Brought back many, many memories. Being a Bulletin paperboy, picking up the papers at Murray's, on the corner of Mercer and Center, hurrying to get them delivered so we could play b-ball on the old court at Park and Center. Some of the other paperboys were the Kraut brothers, the Moss brothers and the Williams brothers. I recall picking what we called "punks" from the banks of the timber creek off creek rd., letting them dry out and burning them at night to keep the mosquitos away (yea, that really worked). Playing all kind of ball games in the street...stick ball, half-ball, wire-ball, etc. The annual Little League parade down Browning rd, thru Bellmawr park to the field on Essex Ave. The nickel soft pretzels sold daily at Annunciation during recess. Bussing it up to Sacred Heart school in Camden for my first year of school before Annunciation opened. Jeez, I could go on and on. Hopefully there will be more posts to great blog and thanks for the opportunity to let me participate.

Born and raised here. Miss the town and the people. Lived on Mercer ave, near the lake. Remember when the road caved in from rain water. Also does anybody remember Officer Clark. Great guy. If you bike got a flat. He put it in the truck and give you a ride home. Rest in peace Officer Clark.
